Our 13-u Lady Hoop team made it into the championship game

winning both games Saturday against Cordova and Foothill Flames.

The championship game on Sunday was played against the Lady Lightning.

"I was really proud of the way the girls played. It was a luxury to be

able to sub players of the same caliber as the girls coming out

of the game.  Our new girls did a terrific job and all of our girls

contributed to this victory. I especially enjoyed the time off the court, these girls

make tournaments fun."  Coach Todd

Consolation Champions Reno Spring Jam 2003

The Varsity team went to Reno this weekend, went 2-1 and brought home some hardware. Although understaffed with just 5 varsity players, the girls came together, dug a little deeper and came out consolation champions.

"This was the most fun I've ever had at a Reno tournament. The girls worked incredibly hard on the court and their behavior off the court was exemplary...Lady Hoops acting like ladies." Coach Art

with a little help from their friends...

Coach Steve accepts another trophy.

Just a few more.

I sure hope you all had as much fun this last weekend as I did. This whole adventure started 5 years ago and I would have never dreamed it would have grown into something this beautiful. Our Lady Hoop girls, their parents, and my good friends coach Steve and Todd have all worked very hard this spring to make this the best group we have ever had. It is simply an honor for me to be associated with The Galt Lady Hoops. Thanks for letting me carry equipment, tape ankles, and sit on the bench. I really love you guys.

JV team at St Mary's College in Moraga

CONGRATULATIONS JV TEAM 2ND PLACE!

WEEKEND RECORD 5-1

Well, we did it again! Another great weekend of basketball with a typical "never say die" Lady Hoop team. I want to thank first you players that participated. You made your coaches and parents very proud with your tremendous effort and determination. Any northern California team that you have played has heard of the "Galt Lady Hoops" and knows you are the team to beat. We destroyed the first 5 we played this weekend, and even though we didn't beat St Mary's, we definitely earned their respect. Victories against Eureka Eagles, Carondelet A and B teams, St Marys B, and  Cordova. These are all good teams and you ladies played them like we knew you could.

Thanks also to those parents that made a commitment to come to St Mary's this weekend and support these girls. The reason we have such a great program is that we have the best parents, that will travel with and support our girls. I really appreciate your commitment to not only support your own kids, but also to agree to "watch" some of the orphans as well. Thanks Darlene & Gilbert, Greg & Denise, Sylvia, and Regina. This was our 3rd year attending the St Mary's team camp and the second time we have made it to the JV championship game.

To you older JV players I say as always, you are my hero's. To you younger girls I say, great job stepping up and helping out. We couldn't have done it without you, and because you were there this year, you will be prepared next year when you lead the JV team.

Your coaches, Steve and Todd are simply amazed at your skill and teamwork. I am honored as usual that you allow me to sit on your bench and hand you water. Thanks for a wonderful weekend.

  JULY 2003

All July tournaments for girls teams are confirmed.

 July 1-4  VARSITY

Oregon City End of the Trail Shootout

July 2, 2003 9:pm:

We made it, 11 hours of driving and 15 potty stops, but that's what you get when traveling with a team. We are having a great time and playing and watching some of the best girls basketball in the country. People have told me that the basketball in Oregon is played at a different level. I didn't understand it until now. Here it is simply the best I have ever seen. Our players have played the best basketball of the summer. Our record so far is 1-3, losing our first 2 games, but playing at a much more intense level than at home. We can't wait to start planning next years trip.

July 3, 2003 10:pm

Four and out. We played our last game today. Lost to an "all star" team from here in the Portland area by 10 points. Can't say our girls didn't play well. We got what we came for, the best basketball we could play. Coach Steve and I are very proud of these girls and hope they had as good a time as we had.

For the first time ever the girls from Galt came to play in the biggest regional girls basketball tournament in the country. More than a few coaches told me we would get "killed" up  here. Well they were wrong. Not only did we suit up and show up, we competed and won a game. We didn't get "blown-out" of any of the games we played, and definitely earned some respect. You don't learn to play at this level without playing at this level. This first group of girls certainly proved how tough the "girls from Galt" are. They have "kept the faith" in themselves, their program and their coach. I salute you Galt Lady Hoop players and look forward to only great things in your future. See you all at the next practice.

As Art and I pondered our decision to enter the "End of the Trail" Oregon Tournament we decided it was a good decision for the development of our players.  We were aware of the superb club teams and the rumors that some of the best girls basketball in the country would be played at this tournament.  The experience is one that will remain as an indelible memory.  Not because it was Oregon or the brand of basketball that was played, but because we took our "Galt Lady Hoop" team into an environment they have never experienced.  They responded by playing with desire and heart, never giving up, in spite of playing the club teams with all-star rosters that had players from several different schools.  Our team consisted of Brittney Alcoriza, Melissa Battaglia, Amy Jacobs, Judy Machado, Samantha Oelsner, Briana Quintana, Kaitlin Sayler and Holli Wood.  They represented our team as outstanding players on the court and as outstanding representatives of our "Galt Lady Hoop" program off the court.  I'm extremely proud to be your coach and to be associated with a terrific group of basketball players.  We also had some fantastic parents to help support our endeavor.  Rosemary and Orlando Toste provided meals, helped with the entertainment and the transportation. Darlene Quintana and daughter Andrea were also helpful in making this a great trip for the girls.  Thank you for your unselfish support and for subjecting our girls to bowling, movies, ice cream, ferrets and great food.

Thanks for the memories and keep the faith,
Coach Steve

Lets go Hoops!

Record 2-3-1.

Lady Hoop JV team battles their way through the Oak Ridge tourney. I have had plenty of parents and quite a few coaches who have seen our girls play comment on their outstanding progress. Sometimes it is hard to see the progression of our players because as coaches or players we are too close to the day to day activities to see it. But the reality is that if we play challenging competition and play often enough we will step up the quality of our game.

As an example of how dedicated our players are one needs to look no further than Holli. Since June 17th, Holli has played in 36 competitive games. That's almost a third more than she will play in High School next season and she has done it in less than a month. After finishing 3 grueling Varsity games in Escalon yesterday, she called my home last night at 9:30 to find out what time we were meeting to go to Oak Ridge this morning. 10 minutes later Ausha called and chewed me out because I hadn't given her the same information.

Lady Hoop players are dedicated and committed to being the best basketball players they can possibly be. This alone makes us proud to be your coaches. I have been on the bench in every game Holli has played in the last 5 years. Probably close to 250 games. I have never seen her or her teammates give up, even when it was doubtful they could pull out a win.

Diane was asked to play Saturday because we were short a few JV players and needed her help. Although she isn't our largest player, and an 8th grader, she accepted the challenge. She played Saturday and stepped up to the JV level with ease. Although she knew she wouldn't get much playing time on Sunday, she came back anyway, and did quite well, knocking down a critical 3 in our first game. That is dedication. Thank you Diane for helping us out and being there today. You are the kind of player I really enjoy supporting and the coaches will not forget your efforts.

Dedication, commitment, and a never say die attitude are the differences between our team and many that we have played. That is why when these girls leave Lady Hoop basketball and go out into the world they will be successful.

Yesterday Coach Steve and I were driving home from 3 brutal games in Escalon with the Varsity team. We were both extremely tired but elated with the quality of play exhibited by our team. It has taken over 5 months but the glimpses of greatness are coming with greater frequency now. The level of fitness alone that these girls have achieved is to say the least impressive. They can not only stay in the game for extended periods of time, but they can play 3 games in a day. Unheard of just a few months ago.

You all know how I feel about Coach Steve. He is the brains in our basketball program and I really enjoy the time we spend together. (Take that any way you want). I love you buddy.

This summers schedule has been difficult for not only the players but the family and coaches that support them. A big thanks goes out this weekend to Coach Dan Reed. He has stepped into our program at a very opportune time. Without a child in the program it is rare that someone will volunteer their time to help, and Dan is one of the few. We are proud to have him. Thanks Dan.

Darlene stepped up and made sure all the girls had just the right sandwich yesterday. Darlene has been a huge help this summer. Driving girls to tournament, (including Oregon at 55 mph) and adopting us by being our team mom. Sometimes in the harried moments between and after games we don't get a chance to say thanks, but believe me Darlene we couldn't do this without you. Thanks.

It is difficult to achieve anything in life without some very hard work. You girls are getting it done. Keep fighting the good fight.

It's Only One Possession

by Jeff Smith

It was only one possession, Why must my coach scream,
My poor defense permitted the basket, But what can one hoop mean?
As the pass comes my direction, And I fumble it into the stands,
The coach's voice rings loud and clear, "Catch with your eyes and hands!"
C'mon, coach, it's a single possession, Our team will be okay.
It's just the first two minutes, My gosh, we've got all day.

At the 10-minute mark I remember, That the center is strong and stout.
A putback for two, quite simply due, To my failure to turn and block out.
But it was only one possession, I didn't commit a crime,
My team is ahead and I'm playing well, And there's still plenty of time!

As the halftime buzzer is sounding, And I watch the ball bank in,
I know that I will hear from my loving coach. Of my questionable effort to defend.
But it was only one possession, Coach - don't have a heart attack!
We're down by one, but we're having fun, I know we'll get the lead back!

The second half mirrors the first, But it's early, it's not a big deal.
That my failure to use a pass fake.  Results in an unlikely steal.
But quickly I sink a jumper.  I'm greeted by high fives and slaps,
But next possession I give up a layup.  While suffering mental lapse.
But it's only one possession, C'mon, Coach, chill out.
It's crazy to see you disgusted.  As you slap the assistant and shout.
"Victory favors the team making the fewest mistakes.
Single possessions are the key. So treat them like gold and do as you're told,
And play with intensity."

I step to the line for one and one, But I have a concentration lapse.
The ball soars through the air - Good Lord, it's a brick!
I'm afraid the support will collapse.
In post game I sit at my locker, Pondering what more I could do.
I realize the value of each possession, What a shame that we lost by two.

July 25-27 Varsity

Rio Linda Summer Jam - 4 games

CONGRATULATIONS VARSITY

2ND PLACE 3-1

It was hot, about as hot as we have ever been. Rio Linda does not have air conditioning. Our Lady Hoop players were playing in their last official summer tournament, finishing off 36 games of summer tournament basketball. It was brutally hot but they persevered. We are very proud of you girls.

There are 2 ways to get better at basketball, both equally important. First is to practice, second to play. This summer we have done a lot of both. Mostly what I remember are these tournaments and how much better you girls play than when you began. It is a very difficult process, but you girls "kept the faith" and kept coming. That says volumes about the kind of people you are.

We are going to take a break now until August 16 when we will start a fall league at Rio Vista. There will still be some open gym time if you would like to shoot in an air conditioned gym. The times are posted on the "home" page.

Some Quotes from NorCalPreps message board about the Galt Lady Hoops:

What's up coach this is lindsey I am finally on the board I do read allot of this stuff yes we did have a bad first half but Galt is no pushover team. thanks for a great weekend . hey chambers what's up lots of love for you boy.we had a great summer but it's only summer lol to all you coaches trying to put something together.

Dr. Bombay, yes I did see a lot of Basketball this weekend!! Too Much, LOL!! Anyways, I thought Burbank looked good all weekend except for the first half of the Championship Game, down 19-16 at the half. Turned up th pressure in the 2nd half and Galt had a lot of turnovers. I think Galt surprised a lot of people, 3 really good shooters and really disciplined. Sheldon looked good except for the game against Burbnk, once again the pressure and turnovers. As for us, 4 starters out of town for Saturday and Sunday, we didnt do well with the youngsters. Overall, I think the Tournament went well, I hope everyone had a good time, and I will see all of you soon, The regular season is right around the corner.

August 16-17

12-u at Reno Summer Jam

JV & Varsity Sac Area Meltdown Madness

Basketball is a tough game. We have had a few weeks off, and have not been able to practice in the gym due to some floor maintenance. We ventured out into some tournament games this weekend with 3 teams. Some might say that we weren't successful based on the score of the games. I say this weekend, you girls got back together and "got back on the horse". Sometimes it can be a little painful to start "riding" that horse again, but you did it. You played a combined 9 games of basketball. Every girl that participated got some great floor time and all learned some lessons.

We talk about "fighting the good fight" and "finishing the race". This weekend we all got back on the floor and got a little closer to finishing the race. You girls that participated this weekend are my hero's. You put on you uniforms and showed up to play on a weekend that many of you probably could have been doing other things. Instead you played basketball against some fierce competition. You ALL got better because of the level we have asked you to play in these AAU tournaments. "Fighting the fight" the way you did this weekend is the reason you will be successful "finishing the race" during your High School season. Great job as usual, and remember,

Keep the Faith,

Art.

  SEPTEMBER 2003

Rio Vista Fall League

Congratulations JV / Varsity 7-1 overall record

Sept 6th

Rio Vista League Opener

vs Liberty and Rio Vista

2-0

Great job Lady Hoop players!

Well we haven't played in a few weeks and here we were this morning in Rio Vista. I can't think of any other place I would rather be on a Saturday morning than a gym with a bunch of Lady Hoop basketball warriors. As you have done so many times in the past you stepped up to the challenge. There is absolutely nothing more beautiful than watching you girls play as a team. Unselfish play dominated today's games and everyone that participated contributed on the floor. Fall basketball is probably the most important games you will play in preparation for the upcoming High School season. One of our goals in the Lady Hoop organization is to develop a sense of "team". We can get so much farther working together than we can focusing on any one individual. This is a team sport and you girls support each other on and off the floor. Sitting on the bench this morning I listened to Brittany yell encouragement to Jessica, one of our newer Lady Hoop players. That is "team building". Good for you Brittney! Thanks for the terrific effort, thanks for the commitment to our club, and see you Tuesday at the track for conditioning.

The water boy.

Sept 27th

vs Stockton and Tokay

2-0

The first time we played in Rio Vista, 4 weeks ago, we were a little rusty. We were playing with a combined team of girls ranging from incoming freshman to seniors. It showed in the way we played. Amazing what 4 weeks and 8 games can do to bring even the most diversified group of players together. We spent the last 4 Saturdays driving to Rio Vista, and never without at least 10 players. That's pretty good commitment from a group that includes a senior that is also playing a fall sport. I think it's a sport if "golf" is actually considered a sport. Great job Lady Hoop Players!

I don't like to talk about individual players because this is a TEAM sport. BUT, I have to say something about one individual. This player came to me in the early spring and wanted to participate. She was a freshman and even though we didn't have her team together yet, she wanted to at least practice with the varsity girls. I welcomed her to practice but also told her there was no guarantee about playing with the older girls. This player literally made EVERY practice and EVERY game. Even though she isn't our biggest player, she has worked harder than any other individual I have ever seen. If we announce a practice, conditioning at the track, or game, you can bet this player will be there. This kid has the "heart" of a lion. Her parents have also been among our most supportive and committed. Even her sister has shown as much commitment as most of our parents. Sometimes it just takes time, and progress in even the smallest amount is still progress. This kid knows that, and this weekend all her hard work and commitment paid off. She played the best offense and defense the coaches have seen, and her self confidence on the floor was inspiring. I wish I had a 100 more just like you, Briana Quintana.

A word to our parents,

Rushing in and out of these games it's frustrating that I don't get the chance to tell you all how I feel. You meet us at Mcdonalds, you drive your own kid and sometimes others to the games. You patiently sit in the stands between games. I know you all have other things you could be doing but you have committed to this team as much as your child has.

The bottom line is that you are as much responsible for your child being on this team as she is. Our parents have committed to our program. Some, like Jim Wood, have been totally supportive of myself and this program since it's inception over 6 years ago. Even when Jim wasn't so sure I knew what I was doing, he has "kept the faith in me" and let us continue the race without interference and without coaching his daughter from the stands. Jim has more experience with basketball than literally anyone I know and he chooses to be our biggest cheerleader rather than a critic. Thanks Jim, I love you man.

This program would not and could not continue without the type of parents we have. You parents are the reason your daughters are on this team. As I have said before, "it's not about the basketball". It's about the type of person we want our daughters to become. You are great role models for our girls off the court. Thanks for making the commitment and following through.

We're not done yet. Check the site for upcoming events!
